The Sentencing Guidelines Commission embodies the goals of the criminal justice system as determined by the citizens of our state through their elected representatives. This system promotes uniform and proportional sentences for convicted felons and helps to ensure that sentencing decisions are not influenced by factors such as race, gender, or the exercise of constitutional rights by the defendant. The guidelines serve as a model for the criminal justice system as a whole to aspire to, as well as provide a standard to measure how well the system is working. Check back in mid-June for a preview of our new website which is set to launch July 1st. The new website will be easier to navigate and will feature streamlined educational materials.
2013 Report to the Legislature The 2013 Report to the Legislature contains information for which the Commission is required to report: modifications to the Guidelines and use of firearms in crimes as reported by Minnesota’s County Attorneys. As in past years, the Commission also took this opportunity to highlight topics that may be of interest to the legislature: sentencing and departure trends; information on felony driving while impaired (DWI) ten years following the enactment of the law; and updates on Commission and staff activities. Sentencing Practices Reports The 2011 Sentencing Practices: Annual Summary Statistics for Felony Offenders, contains information on all felony offenders sentenced in Minnesota. Other reports focus on select felony crimes of interest. Much of the information found in these reports is year-specific, based on the most recent years' sentencing data. The reports also contain some trend information on sentencing practices over time. 2011 Sentencing Practices Data Reports:
